Before your examination a Nurse will ask you some questions about your health and enquire about medications you are taking. If you wish you would be shown a short video about the procedure. A Nurse or Dr will be available to answer any of your questions.
Gastroscopy is performed in a fully equipped examination room. Your throat will be sprayed with local anesthetic spray to numb it. You'll then lie on your side, and you will be given intravenous sedative to make you sleepy. Your specialist will pass the endoscope through your mouth and into the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. The endoscope doesn't interfere with your breathing, most patients consider the test only slightly uncomfortable, and many patients fall asleep during the procedure. Remember that the sedation is not a general anesthetic .The procedure generally takes about 10 minutes but could be longer particularly if you require any endoscopic treatment during the test.
